Why I killed Players   By Jeff Carroll
ne question I always get is how can my movie GOLDDIGGER KILLER have a positive message if it has killings in it. Well, when my film won Best Narrative Feature at the International Hip Hop Film Festival's Odyssey Awards I got a little carried away in my acceptance speech. I did more than just say thank you and explain my philosphy. I dissed the promotion of player behavior in Hip Hop and I mentioned lyrics of Nelly, Snoop Dog and 50 Cent. I would now like to take this time....

A reaction to Imus   By Jeff Carroll
Let me start off by saying I feel the derogatory and sexist comments Don Imus made on his national radio and television show April 4, 2007 about the women of the Rutger's Basketball Team had nothing to do with Hip Hop. Even if he said "rappers use the same language all the time" to try to excuse himself from calling them "Nappyhead Hoes". However, I am happy Hip Hop and the African American communities are talking about the language and images in the music of Hip Hop. As a total Hip Hopper I have been working....

I make B-Movies   By Jeff Carroll
Before the double feature there was the B Movie. B Movies were made to hype audiences up for "feature" movies or A movies. B Movies have simple stories that don't take a lot of energy to get into. They don't have a lot of specific details for viewers to remember. These are movies that focus on the unique elements of film. They are stories where the "kill scene" or the "monster" is the focus. B Movies don't have dramatic stories....

Are You A Golddigger?   By Bro. Worthwhile
According to the stereotype Golddiggers are women who date men for their money. This type of women is viewed as mean, greedy and down right evil by men. By other woman they may reserve a quite admiration for these women. As a young man on the market I was always spooked by this “Urban Legend”. Due to the messed up state of male/female relations in America I found ....

Comedy Ain't No Joke!   By Jeff Carroll
I know it’s a corny title for a story but, this story deals with what happens when funny comics get corny or hits a slump. This is the subject of a new film by RBG Promotions (An Entertainment Agency) called “Holla If I Kill You”. The film is about a comic named Hollaback, obviously taken from his stage show call back saying. In the film Hollaback loses his fame and humor edge. This triggers a killing spree. The film is non-fiction but, it has some very real...

I Want My Own TV Show!   By Jeff Carroll
Like everybody in Comedy, having your own Television Show is a goal. So as the reporter/Entrepreneur that I am, I took on this challenge. I developed a concept (actually I’ve have so many I took one from my archive) and went to where TV show ideas go to get their big breaks. The National Association of Television Programmers and Executives (NATPE) is the alliance of...

How To Put On a Urban Comedy Show   By Jeff Carroll
There are a variety of styles for Comedy Shows. Some may argue that if you know how to do one you know how to do them all. I would say to them that I agree that most of the principals are universal. However, to audience members the slight differences are enough for them to choose one club over the other. Throughout my 14 years as an agent and club promoter I have recognized...

Poetry is Going Hip Hop!   By Brother Worthwhile
Okay, for all of those people into underground rap or straight lyrics then Russell Simmons has got something for you. This is the third season of Def Poets and I think it’s found it’s mark with Hip Hop. I have been a fan of poetry ever since 1989 and now it’s seems like it’s finally caught on. Russell Simmons gets props from me because Def Poets HBO is Hot. The first season was the bomb and...

Artists, Agents and Managers   By Jeff Carroll
“What do I need a manager for, I know more people than he does.” “ I can get bookings on my own, I don’t need anybody to do that for me.” Only when you are on top does it seem like everybody wants a piece of your pie. 10% here, 15% there sometimes 30 or 40% if you want to be real. For a performing artist the professional world of the entertainment industry seems plagued with money sharing and greedy people. Well it is time to grow up if ...

Hip Hop Definition or Description   By Brother Worthwhile
Recently, I attended a panel in Chicago for Jessie Jackson’s Rainbow/PUSH Conference. The panel on Hip Hop and politics. One of the big questions was not answered. The question was what is Hip Hop? This seems like a easy question however, when I got home and searched the Internet I could not find a clear answer. I found a lot of information on the beats and sounds even the movements were described. I went to Afrika Bambataa’s site and Grandmaster Flash’s and theirs didn’t fully define it. I still cold not find a way to define exactly what Hip Hop is. I then decided to define Hip Hop myself. The following is how I would define Hip Hop to somebody that...

What is Hip Hop Horror?   By Jeff Carroll
You’ve probably never heard of this type of movie before and that is because I made it up to promote my film Holla If I Kill You. Since, then I have had to explain my description Hip Hop Horror to a everybody. I got a lot of attention and that’s just what I wanted. I thought of a lot of ways to describe my film Urban Horror, Black Horror, or even a Ghetto Horror. I felt those might be able to describe my film. I didn’t want to limit it to a type of environment with Urban or an economic region with Ghetto. Even though my film had a predominately African American cast I didn’t want.....
